Finding your WHY – Celebrating success with one of my clients

Today I am writing to celebrate the 1 year anniversary of my client, Cam Ecker, who is an inspiration to all. I have had the pleasure of meeting Cam last May 2017 and we have been working together ever since. Referred to me by his personal trainer Joe Berill from Body Form Fitness, Cam has worked consistently hard over the past year to become healthier and stronger, both mentally and physically.

Cam came to see me wanting to get healthy, lose weight and improve his digestion. We began with his initial consultation where I reviewed his overall health, current eating patterns and food journal. I always ask my clients to share with me the reasons “why” they are ready to make changes in their lives. This helps me to create a personalized nutrition plan with education, implementation, motivation and support as a long term lifestyle.

Read below for our conversation between Cam and I talking about his goals, weight-loss journey, and future…

Marsha: What were your initial goals and how did you know that you were ready for change?
Cam: I had finally gotten to the point where I was not feeling well on a day to day basis. The catalyst was one day I was with my son walking along the beach and saw the large shadow of myself and could not believe how I appeared. I realized I had a young son and wife that needed me and I wanted to be around for them for the long term.

Marsha: What caused your weight gain to spiral?
Cam: To be honest, it started later in life for me as an adult. I know I wasn’t eating well but didn’t realize how unhealthy the choices were. I was constantly snacking throughout the day and night and had no understanding of my choices. I didn’t believe the numbers on the scale.

Marsha: What did you find helpful at the onset of our meeting?
Cam: You provided me with an understanding of the underlying issues why I was struggling and how a detailed plan of healthy eating could help in not only addressing my weight but overall health and inflammation in my body. You also suggested some books to investigate focusing on food quality and not calories such as Wheat Belly and Grain Brain which I found grabbed my attention.

Marsha: Did you try other strategies before seeing me?
Cam: The running joke is that I tried everything BUT nutrition and exercise. Until I decided to make nutrition my first priority along with working out.

Marsha: How has your health improved?
Cam: I am 58 lbs lighter, 9 inches smaller and the following areas have improved from energy, not getting winded to play with my son, helping around the house, more comfortable in my clothes, travelling comfortably on the airplane, no more back pain, able to bend down to tie my shoes, less wheezing, better breathing, clearer mind and reduction in medication!

Marsha: Are the changes you have made sustainable?
Cam: Most definitely. I have found your approach doable almost 1 year later into my journey. I appreciate the 80/20 principle of clean eating but not depriving and looking forward to small treats or occasions. I found the food journal to be helpful initially and feel I have a new normal and balance to my life.

Marsha: What is your message to others who are struggling and looking for motivation?
Cam: I recommend to enjoy the journey and not think of it as a diet. It is my day to day way of eating which doesn’t end and has become part of my lifestyle in a positive way. I now understand food quality, portions, labels, and this how I eat. It is building steps and working together with having accountability to a professional for a period of time in order to change habits.

Marsha: Did you meet your goals?
Cam: Yes and much more!!

Marsha: What is your new favourite food?
Cam: I never ate eggs before and now I make your frittatas and other recipes. I use to think eggs were bad and demonized for cholesterol, fat and heart health. Now I love them.
