Chanukah: Embracing the Tradition of Oil Without the Guilt
Chanukah celebrates the miracle of oil, and many of its traditional foods are fried. Here are three ways to keep the delicious flavors while making healthier choices:
1. Baked, Not Fried
Swap traditional frying for baking or air frying. Baked beet and carrot latkes, zucchini latkes, or cauliflower fritters are lighter but still crispy and delicious. Latkes are not only a delicious and traditional food choice during Chanukah but also a fun and enjoyable choice for several reasons. Learn more here >
2. Balance the Meal
Pair heavier dishes with lighter sides. For example, serve latkes with a colourful winter salad of arugula, pomegranate seeds, and toasted walnuts dressed with a citrus vinaigrette.
3. Mindful Portions
Enjoy traditional sufganiyot (jelly-filled donuts) and limit it to one small treat and balance it with a high-protein snack like a handful of almonds or my homemade protein bars beforehand to keep blood sugar stable.
